Two blank pages, because one will have Visa sticker and the other page will have Indian immigration stamps and the stamps from the Schengen country where you are landing and exiting.2) 2 passport pictures according to biometric specifications, not older than 6 months Go to the studio and get a photo of the dimension 35 mm in length and 45 mm in height. Your face (the start of the hairline in the forehead till end of your chin) should be between 32 mm to 36 mm. Get the photo in a light background, white is preferred. Detailed information can be obtained here Cheap Tip: Do not go to any fancy studio and spend a bomb on just the photo. The consulate needs a clean and clear photo with the above mentioned specifications (which are very general) and not for featuring you as a playboy model, so save the buck.3) Leave letter of your company (if employed)This letter serves as a proof of return to your own country, so make sure the letter clearly states your designation, since when you are working with the company, leave dates (mandatorily covering your entire stay), date on which you will resume your duties.No-objection certificate of school or university (if student) This is pretty much same as the above.4) Proof of financial status If employed:Payslips of the past three months / employment contract Provide either of them, not both. Provide three latest Payslips, as it clearly states how much you are earning and if you are capable of surviving a European trip. This document helps the Visa officer gauge your financial status and also validates that the money earned is legal.If self-employed:Certificate of Proprietorship or other proof of ownership (proof of land title, proof of income from agriculture (sales form) etc.) 5) Income Tax Return (ITR) form or Form 16(Certificate of Income Tax deducted at the source of salary)It ensures that all the fund in your bank account is earned legally. Though my experience is that, they hardly care how you have earned the money. If they see there is enough fund available in your account then they are fine.6) Personal bank statement of the past three months with sufficient fundsHere they look into couple of things; first, money in your account is sufficient to cover your entire stay in Schengen area during your travel period. Second, the fund has not been deposited all of a sudden to inflate the available balance. I have written below in detail on how much you should show in your bank account, so keep reading. The bank account statement can be online, but make sure it is a bank statement with details of transaction and not just an account summary. You can show travelers cards (with statement stating available balance), credit card statement, and fixed deposits in your name or joint accounts. If anyone is sponsoring you (like your father or mother), a sponsoring letter addressed to the consulate from him/her and his/her bank statement for last 3 months.7) Proof of accommodation for your entire stay in the Schengen area.This is vital, I have read and heard personal experiences where the Visa has been cancelled due to discrepancy in accommodation arrangements. Make sure you have confirmed hotel bookings with details of the property owner/manager and property details (address). If you are staying at friends/relatives place then copy of their passport (with valid residence permit, in case of non-EU citizen) and an invitation mail will be sufficient as long as you are sponsoring your own stay.8) Flight and transport reservation Again, very vital. Many applications got rejected because of fake bookings. DO NOT make a fake reservation. Search for flights which has minimal cancellation charges and book your flights well ahead of travel date (45-60 days prior) to get a good deal. If you are travelling within Schengen countries then it is advised to show them train/bus bookings for inter-nation travel. One need not show travel details within the country, say if you are travelling within Italy (Rome to Florence) then need not show prior bookings. But if you are travelling from Italy to Switzerland then it is advised to show a confirmed booking.9) Travel Insurance Vital to get visa and also for your own sake. If something unwanted happens and you need to avail medical services then you will be ripped off everything as healthcare is expensive in whole of Europe. The travel insurance must cover Euro 30, 000.00 in case of hospitalization and must cover emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains. The list of approved travel insurance companies can be fetched here.10) Proof of civil status Marriage certificate, birth certificate of children, death certificate of spouse, ration card if applicable or Aadhaar Card.11) 1 copy of your passport’s data page Print the first two pages and last two pages of your passport in an A4 size paper.12) Residency proof, if address in the passport falls outside the jurisdiction region of the consulate: Which consulate or which region you can apply? You can apply at the region (North, South, East or West) where you are residing for last 6 months.This is something none of the blogs available in the internet have mentioned clearly. In case you are a domicile of different region and applying at a different region (domicile of Uttar Pradesh, North and working in Bangalore, South for last 3 years), or simply if the address mentioned in your passport does not fall under the jurisdiction region of then consulate then you need to provide either a copy of your rent agreement, or a letter from your company HR clearly mentioning your address or some utility bill (electricity, water or telephone bill).13) Duly filled application form Kept at last, because it is important. You can either fill an online application (recommended) or also can fill an offline application. German consulate online application can be filled here , similarly other Countries’ application form can be found in the respective VFS website. Self-Declaration Form can be found here, required only for German consulate. If you forced them or threatened them to not file the birth certificate that would make you a likely accomplice and would not go over well with the authorities.But let’s ignore that for a moment and just assume you know how to birth a child on your own and can do it in your basement without any professional medical physician there to oversee you (which would be the only way you could pull this off). In this case you wouldn’t get thrown in jail for failing to get a birth certificate and no crime would have been committed. However you just set up a very difficult life for your child.These are some of the things I was told from by my roommate who didn’t have a social security number until he was 20 years old.No, he could not get a (legal) jobQuite literally he didn’t qualify to get even a job at McDonalds. It just doesn’t make sense.Get them a SSN and if your child decides at 20 that he wants to live off-the-grid than he can burn his Social Security Card and go in the woods and hide from the government. But don’t be selfish enough to make that decision for them.My roommate resents his parents for not giving him a SSN. While all his friends in high school were driving, he couldn’t. While his friends go to Cancun for spring break, he had golden handcuffs in the U.S. and can’t leave. And worst of all he said was that while all his friends were earning money from jobs in high school, he couldn’t get a job.The job part was the hardest for him. He couldn’t leave the house or move out when he turned 18. He was stuck at home.Him working on getting a social security number was difficult and took him two years. We had a guy show up drunk to work and run a tractor up and kind of over a prune tree.That in it of itself would probably have been enough to get him fired, but it would also have been excused. Prunes aren’t worth a damn thing anymore, the tractor was fine (so far), everything could have been forgiven unless my boss realized he was drunk if he would have just walked away. Hell, even if my boss had realized he was drunk he probably would have forgiven it.He’s fired two people in his 25 years of being boss man, one of whom got in the face of his dad who had just had a stroke and the other one managed to spend 8 hours not mowing a yard, then call us up and say he needed some OT to finish. (I’m the boss’ personal go-getter, aka the company bitch).But no, this piece of intellectual brilliance decides that he was going to pull the tractor back down with his Tacoma. Why he didn’t just reverse the tractor off of the tree will forever confuse me, but I digress.He gets his baby Yota over to the tractor, takes a tow rope and hooks up to the front (the end that’s in the air) of the tractor, and left the tractor in gear. Anyone who’s ever tried to do anything knows exactly what’s happening next, which turned into a Tow Mater and sons experiment. He drops his truck into four wheel, hits the gas, andPuts the tractor on its ass. My boss and I come rolling around the corner as he was running from his truck back to his tractor. But even then, my boss didn’t fire him — the guy just quit from shame/embarrassment. The cocaine story has this one beat, but I can’t miss an opportunity to show some tractor tipping.EDIT: Since I’ve got a couple requests: during prune harvesting season we bring in a lot of outside labor contractors. As is common with most job sites, there’s no drinking or consumption of drugs or alcohol allowed during company time on company property. One of the guys, we’ll call him B, every day showed up to work like he’d just ate a bag of freakin’ coffee beans. He mellowed out all morning long, but he was weird, because after lunch he would be really low, but then he’d slam his ass in gear and be rolling along pretty well all afternoon.One day my boss and I decided I was going to learn the ropes from B (he was the best equipment operator we had) so I followed him everywhere. His morning pick-me-ups? Line of cocaine. He mellowed out throughout the day because he would hollow out and put joints inside of his apples that he would “eat” while in the machine, (the machine guys can’t see each other, so we had no idea he was lighting up). He told me the secret to this was putting them inside of a little ziploc baggie to keep them dry. For lunch, he would do another line of coke, then drink a frosty forty, pour another frosty forty in his water jug (we always assumed he brought the extra one from home and left it by his car full of ice so he could drink cold water in the afternoons without having to move). He’d discovered from years of practice I guess that the line of coke and frosty forty counter-act each other well enough that you don’t seem obviously drunk, but you don’t seem too enthused to be doing your job either.Needless to say, the boss man and I were pretty shocked. Nobody said anything because we needed to finish out the harvest, and as I said previously, this guy was a fantastic machine op, but we kept the harvest in house the following year.

Am I the only combat medic to answer this so far?Yes you can. Medics are taught how to but not instructed to. There is a terrible and fine line out there in “the suck” that medics, and medics alone, are asked to walk.You don’t end a person’s life. Full stop. In the rare case that a soldier is mortally wounded (no way to maintain an airway or control bleeding and no higher medical assets within a reasonable time)… then a medic could administer an extra ampule of or two. Even though the doctors and instructors teach the medics this, in the end it’s on that one person’s shoulders. And conscience.Is it better to leave your friend/co-worker screaming in agony until they are too weak to yell? Then watch them convulse every few minutes for a couple of hours. Then finally they stop responding to your voice or even painful stimulus.Brain death is setting in. It takes a few minutes or a few days.Every minute you have a seriously wounded soldier in your unit you have medics that are out of the fight. You also have a much more complicated command situation. Nobody (NOBODY) makes this decision lightly. They also never talk about it.In the movies there is always an EVAC helicopter with escort available and ready to risk anything to get to the wounded. In combat it’s not always possible. “Birds” get grounded for many reasons and MEDEVAC Strykers are delayed by the need for escort vehicles/crews and IED laden roads. In almost all cases, the wounded will live to see the operating room. In some form.Combat wounded are intense. Gunfire is still raging in many cases. People are yelling, confusion is everywhere. The medic will be well trained but under a lot of stress. They know that they have to address breathing and bleeding in 2–3 minutes. They also need to avoid causing further injury and find any hidden wounds. While doing this they have to coordinate any available soldiers with combat lifesaver training to assist them with this or other injured. Finally, they also have to constantly keep the command apprised of the situation.Who has X injury?Can they return to the fight?Do they need to be evacuated from battle or can we take them with us?If they need to go NOW, how long do they realistically have?Can we ground evac through the combat or do we need a bird?While answering all of that the medic has assessed the wounded. Tried to control the bleeding and established a secure airway. Then they need to find a vein for an IV (super hard on a patient with blood loss or missing limbs). While doing this they also need to fill out the ‘9 Line’ medical evacuation form for the radio. Once this is done the medic will check the field dressings, the IV, the breathing. Record the wounds and vitals. Mark when/if was given (how much, when, where administered) and done so that the surgeon can see it and blood doesn’t wash it away. Often in black sharpie on the forehead if patient is unconscious- as awful as that sounds it works well.So, don’t talk about the morality of this until you walk a mile (or 26) in a medic’s boots. Don’t talk about what happens until you live and work with a small team of men and women in a combat zone for over a year at a time. Infantry units are closer than most marriages/families. Your platoon SGT is dad and doc is mom. It’s a horrific moment to see one of your guys literally torn in half and dying. It’s much worse to know that due to a sandstorm there aren’t any flights that day. It’s hell on earth when you realize nobody is coming by road because of the IED you just hit. It’s unimaginable when you realize you only have 2 ampules left and 3 critically wounded friends.I didn’t have to make the hardest choice. I wouldn’t tell you if I did. I sure as &$*# wouldn’t take any judgement from you in any case.Great question. I hope someone who actually held this responsibility in combat can clear it up a little.

Small anecdote.When I worked in USA, I fell and broke my jaw. I could not go straight to the ER because I was leading an expedition along part of the AT.I went to the ER when I got back, I presented them with my insurance card, and they took x rays, and provided care.Then, I found out that my insurance would not cover this, because my injury was one covered by “workers comp” which is when your employer is liable for the cost of medical treatment based on their insurance for employees injuries at work.THEN I found out that I couldn’t claim on workers comp because you have to report the incident within 12 hrs. Which is not possible if you are trekking through wilderness with no means of communicating (this was pre mobile phones)After a YEAR of discussion and disagreement, I wound up having to pay for the treatment myself. Out of pocket. Despite having several million dollars worth of cover on my insurance. Despite not having done anything negligent.Several years later, I had occasion to claim on my medical insurance in the USA again. Again, I presented my insurance card, and received treatment. AGAIN I ended up having to have extended discussions with my insurer, who, in this instance EVENTUALLY covered the expense.When I am in the UK, however, I simply arrive at a hospital, get treatment, and go home, safe in the knowledge that, unless I need further treatment, which I also won’t have to worry about the cost of, I need never worry about it again.I mean, OK the staff in USA were usually NICER to me (NOT always, I have received some amazingly kind and warm care in UK, even just as the visitor of a patient), but, the statistical outcomes in USA are actually worse, the faff to get anything covered even if you ARE insured, and the fact that unless you can afford health care in the USA you are deemed not to deserve any, means that no, I would much rather the UK system.
